Our story
The Aireys Inlet Top Shops Streetscape project will revitalise a commercial precinct in the heart of the Great Ocean Road. The project reconfigures a local road, enhancing public amenity and safety while staying true to the coastal character of the township.
Working alongside lead consultant Pete Wilson Landscape Architecture, Worsley Consulting Engineers was engaged for civil engineering of the preliminary design.
Embedded across the design is a regenerative philosophy: managing surface water at the source and restoring natural hydrological systems. We preserved the existing grading while promoting localised stormwater infiltration and permeable paving. Targeted asphalt resheeting avoided unnecessary demolition and protect buried utilities.
Surf Coast Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and implemented a 10 year action plan to 2031. By adopting a regenerative design approach the project supports adaptation to a changing climate, combating increasing temperatures and heat island effect, with the focus on infiltration and soil moisture levels.
Based upon WCE's benchmarking and the WC3 Carbon App, the baseline upfront carbon footprint using our proprietary WC3 application, was established as 83,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent at an intensity of 66 kilograms per square metre, 30% below a typical pedestrian plaza project.
Beyond the baseline, the preliminary design outlines a pathway to achieve a further 40% reduction through lower-carbon material alternatives to concrete and steel, reclaimed asphalt pavement, and recycled crushed aggregates, alongside targeted asphalt resheeting to avoid unnecessary demolition and protect buried utilities.
